One of the most fun and engaging courses that I took while at UWF was the Honors Seminar for beer brewing. Throughout this course I was able to brew beer and learn the science and history of it while doing so. I learn all about types of beer, how seemingly small changes to a recipe like the kind of yeast can have a huge impact on flavor and much more things. Throughout the class I was able to brew several different kinds of beer to share with friends and family.
The first kind of beer I brewed with my partner was an Indian Pale Ale (IPA). What makes IPAs often stand out is their bitterness compared to most beers. This is thanks to the additional hops that are added to IPAs throughout the brewing process.Â
The second kind of beer I brewed with my partner was a wheat. This of course comes from the fact that wheat is used rather than things like barely or oats as the grain. To make our beer stand out just a bit extra we added some peaches for additional flavor.
For our final project and beer we made a red IPA. Thanks to the addition of roasted barley to the brew the beer is able to attain a red coloring as well as a more caramel flavoring. This beer we presented to a panel of judges and competed against the rest of our classmates to see who could brew the best beer.
